DENTAL HYGIENE & CLEANING

Treating Bad Breath

You can’t see it. It’s hard to work out if you have it. Your friends may not tell you that they know about it. They’re all sort of hoping someone else will say something.

Bad breath can be pretty embarrassing. Fortunately, it’s treatable and we’ve certainly got the expertise to help you. We also know the right way to broach the issue with you. Gently and professionally.

Our patients often mention that they would like ‘fresh breath’ and it’s more involved than just chewing on a mint.

What causes bad breath?
Putting our scientist hat on for a moment: bad breath is the result of sulphur-producing bacteria in the tongue and throat.

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be caused by several reasons, some of which are more obvious than most. For example, eating foods with strong flavours such as onions or garlic bread can lead to bad breath. Fortunately, those cases are generally easily fixed simply by brushing your teeth.

Another cause is that you might just have a dry mouth, which is often the reason why many people wake up with bad breath after a night’s sleep. This is because saliva works to clean the mouth. When you’re dehydrated, it means that saliva can no longer wash away bacteria. In this case, a glass of water next to the bed is a simple way to quickly rehydrate and fix that ‘morning breath’.

Other causes can be more serious. Smoking is a major issue for your teeth, gums, oral hygiene and overall health. It often leads to bad breath, and since smoking can dull your sense of smell, it might be one that you won’t often notice yourself.

Bad breath can even be a symptom of other problems, such as gum disease. In this case, bad breath that won’t go away even when you brush, or a persistently bad taste in your mouth, can be a sign of periodontal disease. This is caused by a buildup of plaque, which can cause cavities.

How can we treat bad breath?
Many cases of bad breath can be treated by looking at your diet and dental hygiene routines to double check that you’re doing everything you can for your oral health. Note that quick fixes such as chewing gum or mints are only temporary solutions, and you may be better off employing a better brushing and flossing habit to fix the root cause. Bad breath caused by smoking can be addressed by giving up cigarettes.

For dental problems (like gum disease) that cause bad breath, our team will advise you on a treatment plan depending on the severity of the issue. Most cases can be alleviated with good oral hygiene, while others may need a professional scale and clean.

At Dentolgy Dental Care, our first step is to rule out any oral issues. Importantly, bad breath can be a sign that something is wrong elsewhere. For example, it may be a symptom of a sinus infection or a medical problem such as liver disease. Our dental team might advise you to speak to a GP or specialist to rule out issues that may not be related to your dental health.

If you have concerns about your breath and oral health, please contact our team to book an oral health assessment.

DENTAL CROWNS

Are any of your teeth weak or damaged? We can restore them with porcelain dental crowns.

If you need to repair, strengthen or protect a tooth, talk to our dentists about dental crowns. Made from natural-looking porcelain, crowns can restore the physical structure of your teeth as well as their appearance. Once cemented into place, they’ll look and feel just like the rest of your teeth.

When you make an appointment for a porcelain crown at Dentology Dental Care, we can usually fit your new crowns in just two visits.

We’ll make sure you know exactly what’s involved in this treatment so you can make an informed decision about your oral health.

To find out more, call us today for a no obligation complimentary discussion about how dental crowns can restore your smile.

DENTAL BRIDGES

A dental bridge permanently replaces missing teeth with false teeth. The bridge is attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges are usually made of porcelain or metal, a mixture of the two, or zirconia. They are fixed in place and, for some people, are an alternative to dentures.

WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Pain caused by wisdom teeth may lead to infection

Wisdom tooth Infection symptoms include the following:

  • Reddened, inflamed gum alongside the wisdom tooth
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Pain
  • Pus from the gum line
  • Difficulties with opening your mouth and swallowing
  • Fever

Day surgery removal options

Wisdom teeth are the four permanent adult teeth at the back of the mouth. They are your third molars, top and bottom. Surprisingly, not everyone develops wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth can become impacted when they emerge and there is little to no space for them. If they become impacted then they may cause you problems or pain especially if you are run down or if you are stressed. Problems with your wisdom teeth can be dormant for a long period of time and may or may not be noticeable. If you have wisdom teeth and they emerge, we recommend you come in to see one of our dentists for an examination to determine whether they will cause problems.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Let’s remove this discomfort

Root canal treatment is used to repair and save a tooth with infected tooth pulp. Root canal therapy removes the infection at the root of the tooth, removing the cause of pain and discomfort.

Symptoms that indicate you may require root canal are

  • Unprovoked or spontaneous pain in tooth
  • Hot and cold drinks and foods cause sensitivity
  • Biting or chewing causes pain in tooth
  • Tooth loosening
  • Gum swelling surrounding the affected tooth
  • Facial swelling

If you require root canal therapy, please contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our dentists. They will perform an assessment and answer any questions or concerns you may have involving the situation and treatment.

During your examination, we may need to include taking X-rays in order to help plan a customised approach for your root canal treatment by revealing the number, size, curvature and the depth of the roots. This will assist in determining the complexity of your case. If you require specialist treatment, we can easily arrange a referral to a specialist Endodontist.

DENTURES

Cosmetic dentures

All of our cosmetic dentures are custom designed to match the personality and look of the wearer. Cosmetic dentures will have your friends and family guessing if your teeth are natural.

At Dentology Dental care, we have expanded on traditional denture-making techniques by providing dentures that resemble your teeth before they were extracted, or what you prefer as a perfect smile.

The denture base surrounding the denture teeth is crafted by hand. The base is carved and textured and then further disguised by tinting and staining with individual colours to closely resemble your natural gums. This is particularly useful if you naturally show your gums when you smile. The teeth used for our cosmetic dentures are aesthetically natural in shape and colour contouring and are carefully selected to suit who you are.

We ask you to bring a photo of your smile when your teeth were intact, or a list of features you would like incorporated in the manufacture of the new dentures to achieve the best possible results.

SNORING DEVICES

Sleep better. Rest easy.

Snoring and sleep apnea can make life difficult. It can affect relationships and can also have some pretty serious effects on your health.
At Dentology Dental care, we can help bring things back to normal so everyone can get their eight hours of sleep.

If you’re concerned about snoring, we can arrange a complimentary consultation where we can discuss what’s been happening and provide you with a home sleep study.
This is done in your own time and from the comfort of your own bed.

Just 24 hours after the sleep study kit is picked up from your home, we will receive your results from our Sleep Physician. We can then talk to you about the options of a snoring appliance. During this consultation, we will take a 3D scan of your mouth to enable us to create a printed snoring device from our digital laboratory.

There are several types of dental appliances that are specifically designed to treat sleep apnea. However, it is important to know what you’re looking for when choosing such a snoring device, making sure that it is safe, hygienic and comfortable.

MOUTH GUARDS

Are you or your kids involved in contact sports? There’s no doubt you want to minimise the potential for injury as much as possible and many sporting bodies now mandate the wearing of mouthguards as protection. Some sports such as basketball have high levels of contact, so a mouth guard definitely makes good sense on the court.

Hopefully, the days of cheap ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards are behind us as most parent understand the need for a quality mouth guard that is individually fitted.

We are now providing fitted mouthguards from just $165. Many private health insurance providers will allow you to claim these as a preventive measure, so it’s worth checking to see if you qualify. However, the final cost will vary from provider to provider.

FACIAL REJUVENATION

When looking to enhance and improve the smile, injectables are a useful treatment.  Your dentist can look at your smile on a holistic level – not only focusing on the enhancement of the teeth but also the soft tissues that frame them.

We can also use facial injectables to help soften smile lines and frown marks and make you look more relaxed and youthful.

This treatment was once only reserved for jaw joint issues such as acute jaw tension or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Dentists have an extensive knowledge of the structures of the face and a keen eye for detail and symmetry. Not only do we understand the complexities of muscle movement and coordination, but also possess the fine motor skills required to deliver injectables swiftly and seamlessly.

Our Dentists who provide injectable treatment have completed further studies to perform the treatment under the strict regulations of the Dental Board. As a result, they emerge highly qualified and, alongside doctors, are the ideal candidates to provide this type of treatment.
